Director Shankar has pulled off a major coup of sorts for his upcoming Tamil remake of the Hindi superhit 3 idiots.

TOI understands that the latest development is that he's gotten director-turned-actor S J Suryah to do the important role of Chatur Ramalingam or 'Silencer', done by Omi Vaidya in the original. Earlier, at the time of the film's casting, it was said that Omi Vaidya would reprise his role in the remake but due to continuous changes in dates, he could not do it. In fact, grapevine has it that he's likely to do the role made memorable by Ganesh in Gautham Menon's Hindi remake of VTV.

As per sources in the 3 idiots camp, it was Vijay who recommended S J Suryah's name for the vital role in the film. CT understands that Vijay, who plays Aamir Khan's role in the remake, has a lot of comic confrontation scenes with S J Suryah. The actor, who is apparently shooting for the film in Ooty with Jiiva and Srikanth, could not be reached for comment.

Ten years ago, S J Suryah made his acting debut doing a small role in Vijay's Kushi which he directed. He then went on to make the controversial New with Simran that was a huge hit and the acting bug caught up with him. His films as hero bombed even as his films as director did well. However, his last release as director — Pawan Kalyan's big-budget action-packed Telugu flick Puli (2010) — that was slotted to be remade in Tamil was a colossal flop.

Though Vijay was the original choice to play the lead role in the film, he backed off citing 'date problems'. Director Shankar then approached actor Suriya, who demanded his salary plus the Telugu dubbing rights. As that was not financially viable, the 3 idiots team went back to Vijay who, post the success of Kaavalan, has realised the need to rework his image.

Actor Srikanth has been shuttling between Chennai and Ooty these days.

Reason? The Roja Kootam star is busy shooting in Ooty for Shankar's Tamil remake of 3 idiots and visits Chennai in between to be with his wife, who had given birth to a baby girl recently.

"I was shooting in Ooty when I got a call from my home, saying I've become a proud father to a little girl. I rushed to Chennai to be with my wife and the newborn. I'm back in Ooty now. "

He has decided to name his daughter Aahana, which means Goddess Lakshmi. Meanwhile, the actor is all happy to be shooting for the Tamil remake of 3 idiots. And the guessing game on who will reprise Aamir's role in the Tamil version — Vijay or Suriya — is finally over. It will be Vijay! Reveals Srikanth, "I'm shooting with Jiiva and Sathyan in Ooty. Shankar sir is with us and if things go according to plan, Vijay will join us in March."

It might have been a bleak scenario for Vijay's `Kaavalan' as it didn't open on Pongal day unlike Dhanush's `Aadukalam' and Karthi's `Siruthai'. The producers of `Aadukalam' and `Siruthai' were on cloud nine as they had a good opening and quite confident that they can spin more profits as Vijay's `Kaavalan' had some worst problems that would keep it away from release.

Unexpectedly Aascar Ravichandran jumped into the picture getting the film out of cans. Now according to the trade reports, it has been revealed that `Kaavalan' has fully occupancy in many theatres while the collections have dropped down for `Aadukalam' and `Siruthai'. Producer K.E. Gnanavel Raja isn't happy with the results as the theatres are empty and didn't witness a good business as his previous movies `Singam' and `Naan Mahaan Alla'.

Kavalan" , the movie which made Vijay to come back to his position. The star faced lots of problems for releasing the movie. Though Kaavalan is said a hit movie , it did not get a good opening collection due to less theaters and other Pongal releases. After few days , the movie got good collection with a late pick-up.

Now vijay is happy after the success of Kaavalan. The actor is currently working on his Next movie "Velayudham" to be directed by vijay. The main reason For Kaavalan Success was Vijay's new appearance compared to his last movies. He attracted all the audience with his romantic performance in the movie. The comedy track between Vijay-Vadivel also got a good response among the audience.

Everyone Knows Vijay has a very good mass in Kerala. Though "Kavalan" Is a remake of Malayalam movie "Bodyguard" , Tamil version Kaavalan too did a good collection kerala. Followed by Marykundu Oru Kunjadu and traffic , Kavaalan is the third highest collection among the other releases.

Siddique made some changes from the Bodyguard script and gave the movie according to the tamil audience which made the movie to get good response in Kerala too. This was not only because of more fans for Vijay in Kerala but also because of the well packed movie from Siddique.

Gemini Film Circuit and Shankar had initially signed up Vijay to do the Tamil version of the blockbuster Aamir Khan's Rajkumar Hirani directed 3 Idiots.

Later Vijay walked out of the film sighting 'date reasons' and rumours of Shankar not happy with the star's reluctance to go for a new look.

At that time, Suriya was roped into the project by Shankar. Suriya's only condition for doing the film was his salary (rumoured to be Rs 12 Crore) plus the Telugu dubbing rights (today's market rate Rs 8 to Rs 10 Crore).

GFC was not willing to give the dubbing rights as they hold the 3 Idiots remake rights for Telugu and was planning to do it with Mahesh Babu.

Meanwhile Shankar started the shoot of the Tamil remake in Ooty and also said he will break the deadlock with Suriya who will join the shoot in February end.

Bur Shankar-Suriya talks broke down as the actor insisted on Telugu dubbing rights, which Shankar knew would make the project unviable.

It was around this time that Shankar started renegotiating with Vijay. Vijay who against all odds was able to release Kaavalan also decided not to dabble in Tamil Nadu politics for the time being.

His father SA Chandrasekhar in an interview to a national daily kept the door open for his son's entry into politics by saying 'Vijay will enter politics when he is 40'.

It was the badly needed breather for Vijay as channels which were opposed to his entry into politics started showing Kaavalan trailer and songs.

Assuming that Vijay does not enter politics for the next three years (he turns 40 in 2014), he has to give hits. Kaavalan's success has proved that Vijay has a solid mass base and if he does good family movies, he can win over the lady audiences. And there is no better director than Shankar to reach the masses and classes alike.

Vijay has now signed the film and will join the film end February after he completes Velayudham.
